Now, I’m not saying Disney+ is the best thing ever.
Not unless they sponsor me 😂
But seriously, having access to it has made it possible to meander down memory lane almost every evening if I want to.
I’ve been able to revisit some of my family classics, those films I know so well that I can almost recite them word perfectly. I’ve been able to explore new animated films that we didn’t have on VHS growing up.
I’ve even been able to discover Disney films that I had never heard of before!
Why is it that we continue coming back to the old classics – Alice Through The Looking Glass, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty?
Is it pure nostalgia? Would it matter if the films were any good, as long as we watched them as children?
I don’t think so.
I believe Disney animated films are so beloved because they are based on fairytales, folk tales – stories and sagas that speak to the very heart of us.
The types of stories that pass down from generation to generation, often changing slightly in the retelling, but still captivating those messages we love to return to: family, belonging, and true love.
It’s these sorts of themes I often try to encapsulate in my books. Even though there’s quite a difference between Hercules and historical romance (maybe not?), I think those core themes of wanting to make sure we feel safe and loved.
So this weekend, if you’re not going to dive into Disney+, I highly recommend you try one of my books!
My favorite, since childhood, is the animated “101 Dalmatians.” I don’t even know how many times I’ve read the original novel by Dodie Smith; my childhood copy is held together with tape. A friend got me a lovely folio edition for Christmas a few years ago. Anyway, Pongo & Perdita are the reason I’ve had Dalmatians for a good deal of my adult life . I miss my Dals, all of whom lived to ripe old age, but my health situation precludes having a big, active dog at this time.

I’ve done Disney+ with the kids and read one of the Governess books this weekend. Why not both? : )
Cinderella and Little Mermaid for sure.

I love Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo. When my son Caleb was little he watched 101Dalmations so much he wore out the VHS tape and we had to buy another! This was fun. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!
