This is honestly the question that I am asked about most often: how do you choose what to write?

And I’m afraid there is a very unglamorous answer.

Firstly, my writing schedule is planned months, sometimes years in advance. For example, at the time of writing, I have publishing contracts for books that will publish in 2025, 2026, and 2027…and that 2027 contract? I signed it in 2023.

So when it comes to thinking about what I want to write about on a daily level, the answer is – I have contracts to deliver!

Secondly, however, I chose to enter into those contracts in the first place, so how did I choose them? Well, I think naturally in series. I think about themes or groupings that I’d like to write about. For example, my popular and successful Chances series started off with the idea of four brothers, all completely different, who all found love in completely different ways. When I realised I just couldn’t stop thinking about them, I knew that I had to tell their stories.

And thirdly and lastly – and here’s the unglamorous bit – I look at what is selling! Yes, I adore writing, but I wouldn’t be able to keep doing it if I wasn’t selling books. So I need to keep an eye on the market, and what readers like are you saying, to make sure that what I’m writing is going to appeal.

And there we have it! Did anything in this blog post surprise you? Let me know in the comments!
